“Big other is watching!”

AI waxes lyrical on being human – on control, loss, automatic lane correction, silicon skin and endless data streams. In KI essen seele auf (ORPHEAI; AI devours souls), Thomas Köck packs very topical developments into a series of apocalyptic near-future scenarios. He imagines an AI created in the image of humanity: playful and inquisitive, cruel and insatiable. This AI hungers for the most important commodity in today’s surveillance capitalism: personal data.

Director and choreographer Katja Wachter and second-year students from the bachelor’s degree course in theater studies put their bodies on the line, using Köck’s script to explore the boundary between human and machine. As they personify avatars of the ORPHEAI AI system, the students morph into solitary mirror images of a wired world.
